Access to Assyria

Robin Zirwanda is a native of Iraq, where his people, the Assyrians, have lived for 7000 years. Presenting this program with his teenage son Josh, they introduce the Assyrian culture through catchy songs in the Assyrian Aramaic language (yes, they speak the language Jesus spoke!). They explore themes of symbolism, cultural practice, displacement and assimilation, demonstrating traditional rhythms, and showing how music has evolved. Their vibrant costumes, based on the dress of their ancient royal ancestors, serve as a talking point to connect their ancient Assyrian heritage with our modern community.
