UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, proclaimed International Literacy Day in 1967. It aims to highlight the significance of literacy and raise awareness and concern for literacy problems in our communities. According to UNESCO, there are more than 700 million adults and 600 million children and adolescents lacking basic literacy skills or not achieving minimum proficiency levels in reading and mathematics.
